Functional Lab Testing in Wimbledon
Standard blood tests are built to catch disease once it has arrived. They are far less good at describing the terrain — the metabolic, endocrine and inflammatory conditions that shape how you feel and function long before a result falls outside a reference range.
Functional testing is how we map that terrain. Every test offered here is clinician-mediated: selected for a reason after your evaluation, never sold off the shelf, and always returned to you with my personal interpretation and a plan. Tap any test to see what it measures and how the sample is collected — and where a fuller page exists, follow it for the complete picture.
Steroid Hormone Testing
Precision Analytical · Doctor’s Data
What it measures
Cortisol across the day, oestrogens, progesterone, androgens and their metabolites — not just hormone levels but how they are produced, used and cleared, including the enzyme activity between them.
Useful for
Perimenopausal symptoms, irregular cycles, a PMOS picture (recorded as PCOS on referral letters), persistent fatigue where the shape of the cortisol day is the question, and male presentations where serum testosterone reads as unremarkable but the picture has not resolved.
Sample & collection
Collected at home. The female assay (DUTCH Complete) uses dried urine samples across a day or a full cycle; the male assay (HuMap) uses frozen urine samples returned by courier. Analysis by mass spectrometry.
Thyroid Testing
Eurofins Clinical Diagnostics UK
What it measures
The full thyroid axis — TSH, free T4, total T4 and free T3 — with both antibody classes, and downstream markers of what the thyroid has been doing to metabolism. Well beyond the TSH-only screen standard testing usually offers. Two configurations: the complete panel with lipid markers, or a version with nutrient and inflammation markers.
Useful for
Irregular cycles, unexplained infertility, recurrent miscarriage, fatigue, or a family history of thyroid disease — particularly where TSH alone reads as “normal” but symptoms persist.
Sample & collection
A finger-prick home test by default, taken fasted; a venous draw at a partner phlebotomy service where a finger-prick sample fails or is preferred.
Fertility Markers
Eurofins Clinical Diagnostics UK
What it measures
AMH (ovarian reserve), FSH, LH, oestradiol, progesterone, prolactin, testosterone and SHBG, alongside a full thyroid panel and related chemistry. AMH is the key marker for IVF planning.
Useful for
Assessing ovarian reserve, ovulation and the pituitary–ovarian axis — a foundational picture for fertility planning, often repeated at different cycle points.
Sample & collection
Venous draw; a morning, fasted sample is preferred. Timing within your cycle is advised at consultation.
CardioMetabolic Testing
Doctor’s Data
What it measures
Fasting insulin and glucose, the adipokines leptin and adiponectin with their ratio, an advanced lipid and lipoprotein profile including apolipoprotein B and lipoprotein(a), inflammatory markers and kidney filtration.
Useful for
Mapping insulin resistance and metabolic regulation — central drivers of the PMOS pattern that can quietly undermine egg quality and ovulation even when standard blood sugar looks unremarkable. Used for men as often as for women.
Sample & collection
One venous draw, arranged fasted, at the clinic or a partner phlebotomy service.
Gut Testing
Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory
What it measures
A single stool sample analysed by quantitative PCR — pathogens, H. pylori with virulence genes, the commensal community, and functional markers including calprotectin, pancreatic elastase and β-glucuronidase.
Useful for
Digestive symptoms, unexplained inflammation, or patterns suggesting oestrogen is not being cleared efficiently — the gut plays a direct role in hormone clearance and nutrient absorption.
Sample & collection
At-home kit. A single stool sample, returned by prepaid courier.
Organic Acids Test (OAT)
MosaicDX
What it measures
A single first-morning urine sample analysed for 76 organic acids — metabolic by-products that show how key biochemical pathways are running: energy production, microbial overgrowth, neurotransmitter turnover, methylation, nutrient needs and oxidative stress.
Useful for
The bioenergetic core of fertility assessment — mitochondrial function and energy production directly affect egg quality. Also valuable in chronic fatigue and complex metabolic pictures.
Sample & collection
At-home kit. Single first-morning urine sample, posted back.
Comprehensive Nutritional & Cellular Function Profile
Genova Diagnostics
What it measures
The NutrEval profile — a combined blood and urine profile of over 125 biomarkers — functional need across antioxidants, B-vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and amino acids, with built-in scoring for methylation, mitochondrial function, oxidative stress and toxic exposure.
Useful for
Building the most complete metabolic and nutritional picture where a detailed assessment is warranted — fatigue, complex presentations, or preparing the terrain before conception.
Sample & collection
Combined at-home urine sample and a venous blood draw; a fasted morning sample is preferred.
Important
Functional testing supports a personalised plan; it is not a substitute for diagnosis by your GP or specialist, and results are best used alongside your existing medical care. Testing is recommended only after your evaluation, never as an off-the-shelf panel. Where a result suggests something that needs medical attention, we will say so and recommend you involve the appropriate doctor. Every fee shown includes the laboratory work and the interpretation consultation.
Considering testing?
The right starting point is an initial consultation, where we look at your history and decide together whether testing would add anything — and if so, which. You can also see all fees in one place.
